Microsemi/Symmetricom’s TimeProvider® 2700 Edge Grandmaster Clock and TimeProvider® 2300 Edge Boundary Clock are a new type of IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) equipment designed for deployment in the mobile backhaul network, at macro base station sites, or small cell aggregation locations. These Edge Master Clocks are optimized to enable economic deployment of small cells and meet the stringent timing and synchronization requirements of 4G/LTE networks following the approach anticipated in the proposed ITU-T G.8275.2 standard for partial on-path support.

The TimeProvider® 4100 is a gateway clock, a new class of synchronization product that accepts multiple inputs from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Synchronous Ethernet (SynE), and 1588 PTP and E1/T1 digital transmission links, and distributes timing flows to multiple end points such as base stations. A gateway clock benefits from multiple layers of protection leveraging other assets in the core of the network.

The TimeProvider® 5000 is an IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) Grandmaster that enables communications service providers to build a stable, robust and reliable network infrastructure. An NTP server option and expansion shelf capabilities that include Synchronous Ethernet and an advanced PTP profile make this timing and synchronization system capable of supporting network needs today and in the future. The continuing evolution of mobile network technologies has driven the need for increased accuracy and greater availability of timing and synchronization solutions. Backhaul Networks with high packet delay variation present timing "jitter errors" and asymmetry challenges that are difficult to solve with current solutions. Furthermore, deploying a GNSS receiver at every location is impractical, particularly in many small cell environments. Together, these challenges create the need for a new overall Synchronization Distribution Architecture for LTE and 5G networks.

SSU-2000 PTP Kits (Discontinued)

The Microsemi IEEE 1588 Blades are fully integrated into the SSU 2000 system. These Cards can be installed as single servers or redundant pairs in any available master or expansion shelf output slot. PTP capacity scales up at a rate of up to 400 full rate clients per card. Front-access IEEE 1588 traffic ports utilize Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules for flexibility to support 100 Base-T electrical or 1000Base-X optical or electrical interfaces. All configuration and management is consolidated through SSU 2000 system management ports to maintain security and isolation from IEEE 1588 ports.

 

What is IEEE 1588?

IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol, also often just called “1588” or “PTP,” was originally conceived to enable precision timing for the test and measurement community and within industrial automation systems. IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) is a packet-based two-way communications protocol specifically designed to precisely synchronize distributed clocks to sub-microsecond resolution, typically on an Ethernet or IP-based network.

1588 can provide real-time applications with precise time-of-day (ToD) information and time-stamped inputs, as well as scheduled and/or synchronized outputs for a variety of systems, ranging from mobile networks, industrial process control, audio-visual networks, smart energy distribution to transportation, automotive and Industrial IoT networking.

Fundamentally, the 1588 protocol depends on time-stamped frames exchanged between a timing master clock and a timing slave clock, with intermediate boundary and/or transparent clocks to maintain the time accuracy as the 1588 packets traverse the packet network. When coupled with physical layer technologies such as Synchronous Ethernet, IEEE 1588 can also provide robust time alignment, with the addition of phase synchronization. IEEE 1588 is the only standardized terrestrial mechanism today to deliver phase/time via a packet-based network with nanosecond accuracy.
