Custom GNSS Antenna Installations

Expert, Experienced, GNSS GPS Antenna Installation

When a clock goes in holdover due to a failed GNSS/GPS signal, the cause can be range from a failed ground, a delamination of a printed board, a loose connection, a failed antenna head, or interference from a natural source. Correct antenna positioning is vital to timing reliability.

GNSS Antenna Installation Best Practices

A properly installed GNSS antenna is critical to achieving accurate and reliable satellite-based timing and positioning. To ensure optimal performance, follow these key best practices for GNSS antenna installation.

Location and Placement
The antenna should be placed in an elevated position with a full 360-degree view of the sky, free from obstructions such as buildings, trees, or other structures. Even partial obstructions can degrade signal quality and introduce timing errors. Avoid placing the antenna near reflective surfaces to minimize multipath interference, where signals bounce off surfaces before reaching the antenna.

Mounting
Secure the antenna on a sturdy, vibration-free mast or rooftop mount. Use non-corrosive materials for mounting hardware to ensure longevity, especially in harsh weather conditions. The mounting point should be grounded to protect the antenna and connected equipment from lightning strikes and static discharge.

Cabling and Connections
Use high-quality, low-loss coaxial cable for the connection between the GNSS antenna and receiver. The cable length should be minimized to reduce signal attenuation but long enough to reach the receiver without strain. Weatherproof all cable connections and use surge protectors to prevent damage from electrical surges.

Testing and Maintenance
Once installed, verify signal strength and quality using the GNSS receiver’s diagnostics tools. Periodically inspect the antenna for physical damage, debris, or corrosion. Regular maintenance ensures continuous optimal performance and longevity.

Proper GNSS antenna installation is essential for accurate synchronization in critical infrastructure applications like telecommunications, power grids, and data centers. Adhering to these best practices ensures that your GNSS timing systems deliver precise, reliable results.
