#1: Syncworks, Burns & McDonnell, and Southern Company

Rob Jodrie, Technical Services Manager, Syncworks

Category: Telecom Networks

Day/Time: Wednesday, May 23, 9:10 AM

Topic: A Strategic Evolution To Packet-Based Timing: Leveraging Precision Time Protocol Across Your Network

Why He’s Must See: Packet timing is the present and the future. Learn how to fully leverage your current timing investments and how to evolve towards PTP.

Southern Company  faced the challenge of a SONET to packet network transition and together with Syncworks and Burns & McDonnell, designed and deployed a new MPLS system to provide system-wide transport for critical applications. While at UTC 2024, learn how this initiative introduced stringent new timing requirements and mandated a departure from the frequency BITS clocks traditionally used to synchronize TDM environments. To provide the necessary accuracy and traceability, Southern Company deployed Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588 PTP), Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), and Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronization sources to provide frequency and time of day for the MPLS, SouthernLinc LTE, and corporate IT networks.

Day/Time: Wednesday, May 22 at 8:30 AM.

Topic: What to Do with Your Broadband Infrastructure Beyond High Speed Internet

Why He’s Must See: Utilities have constructed and operate extensive fiber optic broadband infrastructures . These were initially built to serve varying purposes. Many of the recent builds were initiated to provide high speed internet to unserved and under served communities. The commonality in these infrastructure builds is the adaptability to other uses beyond initial purposes. This panel discussion will explore the variety of applications that can be supported via fiber optic broadband infrastructures.

UTC Telecom & Technology:

A Strategic Evolution To Packet-Based Timing: Leveraging Precision Time Protocol Across Your Network

Thursday, May 23, 9:10 AM. UTC Telecom & Technology 2024 brings together three powerhouse firms in the Telecom Networks category. Join Rob at Booth #521 afterwards to discuss. Here’s more about all three presenters at UTC 24 in Mobile, Alabama.

Southern Company faced the challenge of a SONET to packet network transition and together with Syncworks and Burns & McDonnell, designed and deployed a new MPLS system to provide system-wide transport for critical applications. While at UTC Telecom & Technology, learn how this initiative introduced stringent new timing requirements and mandated a departure from the frequency BITS clocks traditionally used to synchronize TDM environments.

While the enablement of MPLS was the catalyst for IEEE-1588 PTP, it became clear that a highly accurate and reliable packet timing source could be broadly utilized across the network. This UTC 2024 session will explore the various use cases and mutual benefits of packet-based timing, including next-gen transport, mitigation of GPS vulnerabilities and Grid timing backup from a secure telecom core. Learn how to fully leverage your timing investments, plan for emerging applications and navigate the various stakeholders that will come to rely on your clocks.

Join our speakers at UTC Telecom & Technology 2024 and gain insight into how you can advance your network.

WISPA, short for “Wireless Internet Service Providers Association,” is a non-profit trade association that represents the interests of wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) in the United States. WISPs are companies that offer internet access to rural and underserved areas using wireless technology.

The History of WISPA

Wispa dates back to the late 1990s when several WISPs realized the need for a collective voice to advocate for their interests and address common challenges. In 2004, a group of WISPs formed Wispa as a trade association dedicated to promoting the growth and success of the wireless internet industry. Since then, Wispa has been instrumental in shaping policies and regulations that affect WISPs and their customers.

One of the notable events organized by Wispa is WISPAPALOOZA. WISPAPALOOZA is an annual trade show and conference focused on the wireless internet industry. The event provides a platform for WISPs, technology vendors, industry experts, and other stakeholders to come together, exchange knowledge, showcase products and services, and network with peers.

WISPAPALOOZA features various activities and sessions aimed at addressing the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the industry. These may include keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, training sessions, product demonstrations, and networking events. The event attracts participants from across the United States and even internationally.

WISPAPALOOZA has gained a reputation as one of the premier events for the wireless internet industry, offering valuable insights, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovation. It serves as a hub for WISPs to stay updated on the latest technologies, regulatory developments, and best practices in the field.

Over the years, WISPAPALOOZA has grown in size and influence, reflecting the rapid evolution of the wireless internet industry. It has become a must-attend event for professionals, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts who are passionate about expanding broadband access and bridging the digital divide.

Through WISPAPALOOZA and other initiatives, Wispa continues to play a vital role in advocating for the interests of WISPs, promoting industry growth, and ensuring that wireless internet services reach underserved communities.
